YPI Rural Program

Even though 20% of the United States population lives in rural areas, only 11% of physicians practice in these areas. Rural Young Physician’s Initiative was created to address this disparity in medicine. Due to lack of access to medical mentorship and network, getting into medical school can be a long and difficult process, especially for students from rural communities. Through YPI we provide a positive and engaging mentorship experience to prepare high school and undergraduate students in their journey toward becoming a future physician.

The participants are provided with the necessary support and guidance to develop a structured plan and direction to achieve their goals. We have relationships with local high schools and colleges where we host monthly events to increase exposure to the medical field, share meaning and purpose of medicine, how to prepare for a medical education, and what it is like being a doctor.

YPI Rural Goals

  • To help rural students to better understand the process of applying to medical school
  • To provide mentorship and support in areas where few physicians are available as resources to students
  • To create a generation of rural students that will eventually become rural physicians and ultimately increase access to care in rural United States

YPI Rural Mission

  • Reach out to schools in rural areas or schools that may cater to rural population
  • Set up sessions that help rural students understand that they are capable to pursue medicine and then guide them on how to reach medical school
  • Create mentorship circles that provide direct access from medical students to high school and undergraduate students
